That saying. We've all heard it. "It only happens once in a blue moon." That rare 'blue moon' is happening tonight and it's our second full moon this month. Have you noticed the moon the past two evenings?! It's been so bright and beautiful. I've sat outside, just staring up at the well-lit night sky, in awe of it's magnificence. Tonight's blue moon is going to be epic. So, what does it all mean?

There are two trains of thought with blue moons. There is the 'scientificky' version, which describes all the technical stuff, and then there's the emotional/spiritual/astrological component which takes you into a deeper journey into planetary alignment and how it effects people on an emotional level.  I love learning from many sources and think there is value to each mindset here.

First, the science stuff. We have not seen a second full moon in one month, since August of 2012. Blue moons happen because of particles in the air or smoke caused from fires or volcanoes, which give the moon an blue hue. The last blue moon to be seen was in Scotland in 1950.

"The most recent blue moon that was truly blue in hue was in Edinburgh, Scotland, in September 1950. Astronomer Robert Wilson of the Royal Observatory observed the event and concluded that the moon was blue in color because the satellite’s light was traveling through a patch of clouds that had particles of smoke and ash from forest fires burning in Alberta, Canada. Those particles crossed the Atlantic Ocean and hovered over Scotland during the lunar event, creating a rare spectacle, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration."

While it is being said the moon may not be as blue, the fact still stands: it is rare. The next such lunar event will not happen again until 2018.

I have heard both sides when it comes to the astronomy aspect of moons. Some say it's 'hogwash' and others praise the insights that come from astronomy. I feel that the world is a big place with lots of human nature history. I believe that cultures, in times when iphones didn't exist, took the time to not only observe planets, but also people. Those observations of people, characteristic traits, etc.. are worth acknowledging, if nothing else. To me, that is where astronomy comes in. As I learn more, I have gained better insights but I also do not take it so seriously that I only look through that scope or lens.

Here are a few insights from an article about it on elephantjournal.com:

"The skies have collided to physically slow all of us down. It seems that it is so easy for most of us to get caught up in our daily lives that we often feel we can push aside issues or decisions because it seems like there will always be more time—more chances.

This moon we are being asked to stop, look around and to see the bigger picture.

We are being asked to notice where in our lives we have been neglecting the truth, or what situations we have been putting off. It’s not easy to deal with life head on—but this moon isn’t only encouraging it, it is making it a requirement."

"The full moon will be shining a decadent light of truth deep within our hearts.

This will give us the opportunity to get  a good grasp on what is in our heart of hearts—if we don’t have our soulmate or twin flame as our lover, then there is a good chance we are aware of who they are, or may start to recognize them around this time.

Sometimes the most wonderful aspects of our lives can be the most terrifying—and that is okay, no one ever said greatness and easiness were one and the same. The thing we all have to remember, though, is that if it doesn’t scare us even a little bit, then it lacks the ability to be that once in a lifetime opportunity to change our lives for the better.

Nothing amazing ever comes from us staying in our comfort zones."

I look at every day as a chance for us to make a choice in our lives. To live better, do better, love better and learn more. I hope the excitement of this blue moon will encourage you to make a decision you've not made before, kiss someone beneath the big moon and do something spontaneous. And if your new found bravery tonight doesn't happen to work out, you can always say, 'Hey, it only happens once in a blue moon!' ;)
