Leading up to this game, the media focused on the Yellow Jackets high powered offense taking on the Hawkeyes stifling defense.  But it was the Iowa offense that bested Georgia Tech.  QB Ricky Stanzi threw two early Touchdown passes and the Hawkeye defense took it from there to give the Hawkeyes their first and only BCS Bowl win.  DE Adrian Clayborn took home MVP honors.

Things were different back in the 50s.  The Hawkeyes were already declared split National Champions with LSU in two polls prior to the Rose Bowl.  So the Hawkeyes decided to prove they deserved it outright.  They jumped out to a 20-0 lead on Cal at halftime and never looked back.  Halfback Bob Jeter was named Player of the Game. One poll following the game declared Iowa the outright National Champion.  The Hawkeyes haven't won a Rose Bowl since.

In what has become known as "The Catch" among Hawkeye fans everywhere, QB Drew Tate found WR Warrren Holloway for a 56 yard Touchdown as time expired to give them the win.  LSU coach Nick Saban would go on to leave Baton Rouge to coach the NFL's Miami Dolphins, while Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz went on to sign a seven year contract extension.  LSU became the first defending champion to lose a non-BCS bowl the following year.  Tate was the game's MVP.
